18/03/2010 - Feral Pigeon Programme
Feral pigeons have taken up residence in roof voids and air-conditioning units of homes in Churchlands Green.

Feral pigeons are natural homing birds and once they have established a home range will remain there for the duration of their lives.  They are also not native to Australia and pose a significant environmental threat to native birds which are often displaced from the habitat.

The pigeon faeces on roof tops and sides of buildings are not only unsightly, but also highly corrosive and damaging to electrical and metal fittings of the buildings.

Aside from being a nuisance, the main problem with pigeons is that they are a potential health risk to people. These urban pests can carry disease and play host to lice, mites and louse flies that are readily transferable to humans.  Some of the diseases can also be caught from pigeon faeces.

To tackle the feral pigeon problem a co-ordinated approach is required.  A feral pigeon control programme will be co-ordinated by the Churchlands Green development management.  Operations will be managed by Feral Bird Management, who are experts in pigeon removal.

All problem buildings will be inspected in order to locate and remove all the birds.
Ongoing six monthly inspections will then be undertaken to ensure that re-establishment by the pigeons does not occur.
